Brick Cardigan with Pilot Hat

Cool cardigan with a pilot hat. The model is over a year, and the size is 6-12 m, so it will look more like a smoke jacket at first, and fit for a long time.
Size
6-12 m (2-3) 4-5 (6-8) y:
Size 4-5 y for free. The rest can be bought here.

Pickles Pure Alpaca
100 (150) 150 (200) 200 g main colour
50  (50) 100 (100) g of 4 different pattern colours

Needles
DP and 32” circular needles US 6
16” circular needles for the hat.

Gauge per 4”
19 s/48 rows in pattern
18 s/42 rows in garter

Measurements, lying flat

CARDIGAN
The cardigan is  one piece, knitted bottom-up, parted by the sleeves and joined over she sleeevs/shoulders.
Cast on 127 s in main colour.
Knit 6 rows in garter stitch.

Repeat this pattern:
Note that the rows are not listed in cronologically
Row 1 and 2, 7 and 8:
Knit stockinette in main colour.

Row 3 and 5 (right side):
Use a pattern colour. K1 *slip 1 with yarn in back, K3*
Repeat from * to * until 2 s remain, slip 1, K1.

Row 4 and 6 (wrong side):
Use a pattern colour. K1 *slip 1with yarn in FRONT, K3*
Repeat from * to * until 2 s remain, slip 1, K1.

Row 9 and 11:
Use a pattern colour. *K3, slip 1 with yarn i back*.
Repeat from * to * until 3 s remain,  K3.

Row 10 and 12:
Use a pattern colour. *K3, slip 1 with yarn i FRONT*.
Repeat from * to * until 3 s remain,  K3.

Repeat these 12 rows until the piece is about 10.2” and you are about to start row 1 or 7. Make a note where in the pattern you are, so you’ll start at the right place later.

Left front piece
K 29 s, cast on 46 new s by making backward loops.
Turn, and purl back.
Continue on row 3 or 9 according to where you left off.
Continue in pattern until the piece is about 15.7", and you are about to start row 1 or 7.
Knit 2 rows in stockinette, main colour, and leave the stitches for later.

Back piece
Cast on 46 new s in main colour on the right needle. K2tog as if you were to purl, K 66 s, cast on 46 new s by making backward loops.
Turn and purl back.
Continue on row 3 or 9 according to where you left off.
Continue in pattern until the piece is about 15.7", and you are about to start row 1 or 7.
Knit 2 rows in stockinette, main colour, and leave the stitches for later.

Right front piece
Cast on 46 new s in main colour on the right needle, K2tog as if you were to purl, K 28. Turn, and purl back.
Continue on row 3 or 9 according to where you left off.
Continue in pattern until the piece is about 15.7”, and you are about to start row 1 or 7.
Knit 2 rows in stockinette, main colour, and leave the stitches for later.

Assembly
Use kitchener’s stitch to weave together the sleeves/shoulders. Start at the cuff of each sleeve, and stop when 14 s remain of each front piece.
Leave the rest of the s for collar.

Collar
Place a marker in each end of the needle with the collar stitches. Use the same needles to pick up 64 s along each side for front bands. Knit the front bands and collar in one piece.

Knit garter stitch back and forth. Increase 1 s on each side of the 2 s that has a marker in the middle of them = 4 s in total.

Make 8 button holes evenly on a row from the right side when the piece is about 0.6" like this: K2tog, YO.
Continue in garter stitch until the front band is about 1.4”.
Cast off loosely.
Sew under the sleeves and attatch buttons.

Cuffs
Pick up 30 s around the sleeve holes. Knit garter stitch in the round for about 0.8”. Cast off.


HAT
The gauge stretched out is about 14 s. The hat is quite stretchy.
Start with the small flap in the front.
Cast on 14 s un US 6.
Knit back and forth in garter stitch.
On row 3, increase 1 s after the 2 first s and before the 2 last s.
Continue in garter stitch for another 9 rows. Increase in the same way as on row 3  on the last row= 18 s.

Start knitting the ear flaps (knitted in one piece).
Cast on 32 s on small circular neeldes US 6 and knit garter stitch back and forth.
Knit 2 rows.
*On the next row increase 1 s after the 2 first and before the last 2 s* Knit 3 rows.*
Repeact from * to * 6 times in total,
= 44 s

Turn and knit 1 row. Cast on 3 new s at the end of the row by making backward loops, knit the front flap (make sure you knit it from the correct side), make 3 new stitches = 68 s.

Continue in garter stitch in the round.
Change colour on every round in the way you like. Decrease 16 s evenly on every third round 4 times in total when the piece is  about 4.7”.
K2tog on all s on the next round. Use a tapestry needles and pull the rest of the s together.

Sew the flap to the front of the hat to make it sit.
