Bring-it-on baby blanket

In the Nordic countries we tend to use wool a lot. Some use wool for their babies all year around. If you´re due with a summer baby, though, a soft, stretchy cotton baby blanket can´t go wrong. It´s perfect for wrapping the baby when its´newly born, and super as a bed spread later on. This is a very easy pattern, and even if you only know how to knit the garter stitch, it should suit you. If you´re more advanced it´s great for tv-knitting, or perhaps playground-knitting? Oh, and do you prefer wool, try knitting this with the Pickles Extra Fine Merino or the Pickles Cashmerino Silk

What you need
7 balls of either cotton / Pickles Extra Fine Merino / Pickles Cashmerino Silk (the yarn should require a needle size 6, US)
(You might just need five balls, but we wanted seven colours)
Large circular needles US 10
Large circular needles US 15, for casting on and off.

How we did it
Using the size 15 needles, cast on 110 stitches. We use the larger needles to cast on and off to make sure it stays stretchy in the ends as well as in the middle. The blanket is knitted with larger needles than what the yarn requires, and that´s why it´s very important to remeber this.

Change to size 10 needles and knit 4 rows using the garter stitch. Then you´ll repeat the following four rows throughout the blanket.

Row 1: K2 together, K2 toghether, YO, K1, YO, K1, YO, KI, YO, K2 together, K2 together.

Row 2 - 4: Knit the garter stitch.

Repeat until the blanket is 88 cm. Finish by knitting the garter stitch for four rows. On the fourth you´ll change needles to size 15. Cast off on the next row.

Assemble the loose ends and start waiting for the baby!

Bigger babies enjoyed the blanket too by the looks of it.

another question: why circular needles? can it work with normal needles too? thanks! theblankets is great though.... cannot wait to start...

mai 7, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterBrigitte

Hi! It´s probably going to be really tight on regular needles, as there´s a lot of stitches, and its easier to stretch it out to see the real size when you use large circular needles, but feel free to use any needles you want;)

K2 together=knit 2 stitches together.
YO= yarn over (to make an extra stitch)
K1= knit one stitch

Hope it helps;)

HI,

sorry to bother you again, but i´ve knitted a part and there ar eno holes appearing, so i guess i´m doing something wrong with the yarn over. i knit a stich but don´t let ik go complety and make another stitch out of it. The second stitch out of that stitch i sprobably the thing i do wrong... do i have to take the wool infront ofthe needle and knit it as a purl?

thankyou!

Wow, this is gorgeous! I love lacy chevron and feather & fan patterns. And this is so easy. Keep going with it and it looks like it would make a yummy shawl too. Thank you for sharing the pattern!

About how often did you switch colors?

Also, on row 1 I'm assuming you began and ended the row with a knit stitch?

juli 17, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterPaige Y.

Hi Paige.
We just changed the colour whenever we felt like it. Just make sure you change so that you start knitting with a new colour on row 1.
There is no knit stitch at the beginning and the end of row 1. The row has a pattern divided by 11, and it´s repeated 10 times=110 stitches.

Best of luck!

Thanks so much - I counted wrong and thought the pattern was divided by 12 instead of 11. I can't wait to make this blanket -- I found some lovely yarn to use for it.

Cool!

Is this pattern reversible? What does the other side look like?

Beautiful!

Hello, your pattern is lovely! A question though, where the pattern states:

"Change to size 10 needles and knit 4 needles using the garter"

Does this mean "change to size 10 needles and knit 4 ROWS using the garter (stitch)" ? Meaning, I'm knitting four ROWS, not 4 NEEDLES ?

Just checking! It's an adorable blanket with all of the cute colors.

Thanks,
Valerie

Hi Valerie, that´s correct, ROWS, not needles. (It´s has been directly translated from Norwegian, where we say "needles" for rows:)

I really love this blanket, but I am having trouble with the pattern. In the instrustions, it has K2TOG K2TOG YO, K1, YO, K1, YO, KI, YO.
Is the KI a typo and should it be K1 or do I just not know what a KI is and is that the reason I am having trouble?
Each time I repeat the pattern row the number of stitches grows! I have tried practice swatches using the pattern of 11 stitches 3 times (CO 33), 5 times (CO 55), and even the original pattern of CO 110. I have gone back and counted to make sure I didn't add any extra YO's or K1's. I just don't know what I could be doing wrong!
I know the number of stitches shouldn't increase because if I continue on, there is still no clear pattern.

august 19, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterBriana

That is a K1 yes. Its a typo.

You repeat a pattern of 4 "YO´s" and 4 "K2tog" throughout the row, that should leave you with the same number of stitches you started with?

Hope this helps?

Thank you for the help. I knew as soon as I posted a message I would get it!
For some reason I hadn't seen the last 2 K2TOG's. No wonder my stitch count was growing!!
This is a beautiful blanket, thank you for sharing the pattern.

august 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterBriana

That´s good to hear Briana, good luck with the rest of the blanket! :)

I finished the blanket! It is so beautiful! Thank you for the pattern!

Beautiful Blanket! In the picture, the blanket looks as though the stripes are wavy. The picture with the little kid and the tea kettle looks like the edges are wvy. How did you obtain that effect?

oktober 1, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterSuzie

Suzie, the waves are a result of the patterns YO´s and decreases.
