Cute Candy Cardigan

A classic cardigan with a colourful touch. Use all the colours in your scrap yarn basket for a unique yoke:)

19 s/28 rows in stockinette
19 s/40 rows in woven stitch (gauge MUST be followed for the propotions in this project to turn out correctly)

Needles
24”, 32” or 40” circular needles and DP needles US 2 1/2 and 4

Yoke
Cast 61 s in main colour on circular needles US 2 1/2. Knit 2 garter ridges pretty tightly back and forth. Swap to US 4 .
PM, 4 in total, after 6 (7) 8 (9) 9 s, then 12 s after that, then 21 s after taht, and at last 12 s after that.
This marks where you will increase.
Knit the woven stitch like this:
Row 1: *Slip 1 with yarn in back, K1 in pattern colour* Repeat from * to* until 1 s remains, slip 1.

Row 2: *Slip 1 with yarn IN FRONT, K1 in pattern colour* Repeat from * to* until 1 s remains, slip 1.

Row 3 and 7 (NOTE: not cronological numbers)
Knit in the main colour and increase at all 4 markers like this: When 1 s remains before the marker, increase 1 s, K2, increase 1 s = 8 new s on each row

Row 4 and 8:
Knit in main colour

Row 5: *K1 in pattern colour, slip 1 with yarn in back.*
Repeat from * to* until 1 s remains, K1 in pattern colour.

Row 6: *K1 in pattern colour, slip 1 with yarn IN FRONT.*
Repeat from * to* until 1 s remains, K1 in pattern colour.

Repeat row 1-8 until you’ve increased 16 times in total = 189 s.
Place the s for sleeves onto some scrap yarn = 44 s for each sleeve.

The body
The rest of the s is knitted in one piece in main colour, stockinette.
On the first row cast on 4 new s under each sleeve by making backward loops. Also increase 2 s evenly on each front piece and 4 s on the back piece = 117 s.
Knit until the piece is 14.1”.
On the last row swap to US 2 1/2 and decrease 8 s evenly.
Leave the s on the needles for front bands.

Front bands
Place marker in each end of the needles with the body stitches to mark the corners. Use the same needles and pick up about 58 s along each of the sides of the front pieces (for front bands).
Knit back and forth in garter stitch and increase 1 s before each marker and 1 s after each marker. on every second row.”
After about 0.6” make 7 button holes on one of the front bands like this: K2tog, YO.
Cast off after about 1”.

Sleeves
Cast on 4 new s under the sleeves. Knit each sleeve in stokinette in the round on DP needles US 4.
Increase 2 s evenly on the first round = 50 s. When the piece is 9.4” cast off 16 (19) 20 (23) 25 s evenly = 30 s.
Swap to US 2 1/2 and knit garter stitch for about 1.2”. Cast off. Maske another sleeve.

Sew under the sleeves.

For those of you who ´s been following us for a while you know that we love the garter stitch. But we also love nice patterns and stitches. The woven stitch is super-easy and super-nice; the best of both worlds.

The cardigan is knitted using US 6 needle, but the yarn requires US 2 needles. If you want a tighter knit, we recommend using US needles 3 or 4. Or you can switch to smaller needles after finishing the woven stitch. The cardigan ended up being pretty wide, and it wouldn´t hurt to change to smaller needles, especially if you´re a loose knitter.

The size is 6 months, but we made an extra fold on the sleeves, so that it can be used over a longer period of time. The cardigan is a top down knit.

What we used
4 balls of baby wool, requiring US needles #2.

How we did it
Knit back and forth.

Cast on 61 stitches.
Knit the garter stitch for 4 rows using colour #1.
Start the woven stitch.

Row 1: * Slip 1, k1 using colour #2 * Repeat from * to *. Make sure that the yarn is at the back of the piece when you slip the stitch.
Row 2: * Slip 1, k1 using colour #2 *. Repeat from * to *. Make sure that the yarn is at THE FRONT of the piece when you slip the stitch.
Row 3: Knit using colour #1. Increase like this: k10, increase by knitting two stitches into the next stitch. Increase again in the next stitch, K5, knit two stitches into the following two stitches, K23, knit two stitches into the following two stitches, K5, knit two stitches into the following two stitches, K10.
Row 4: Knit
Row 5: * K1 using colour #3, slip 1 Make sure that the yarn is at the back of the piece when you slip the stitch.
Row 6: * K1 using colour #3, slip 1 Make sure that the yarn is at THE FRONT of the piece when you slip the stitch.
Row 7: Using colour #1 knit while increasing: K11, knit two stitches into the following two stitches, k7, knit two stitches into the following two stitches, k25, knit two stitches into the following two stitches, k7, knit two stitches into the following two stitches, k11.
Row 8: Knit
Repeat these eigth rows until you have increased 16 times in total. You should increase so that you get a line pointing from the top of the neck down towards the armpit on both sides of the neck (Meaning that the next time you increase you knit 12 stitches before starting to increase. The next 13 and so on.).

When you´ve increased 16 times it´s time to separate the arms from the body piece.

The body piece
Start from the front. K 26, knit two stitches into the following two stitches. Put the next 39 stitches on a thread for sleeves. Increase 4 stitches under the arm by making loops. Knit two stitches into the first two stitches of the back piece, k55, knit two stitches into the following two stitches. Put 39 stitches on a thread for the second sleeve. Increase 4 stitches under the other arm. Knit two stitches into the first two stitches of the other front piece, knit the rest of the row.

Knit on the front and purl on the back over the next 13 cm.
Assemble loose ends from the woven stitch before starting on the front bands.

Front bands
As you knit on large needles, there´s room to pick up stitches along both sides (where the buttonwholes are supposed to go). You will now knit the front bands as well as the lower end of the jacket in one!

Pick up 41 stitches along each side using the differen ends of the circular needles. From here on you only knit the garter stitch.

Row 1: Start at the top of the first front band. Knit 40 stitches. Increase one stitch on both sides of the 41st stitch. Knit the lower end of the jacket. Increase one stitch on both sides of the first stitch on the second front band. Knit to the end of the row.

Row 2: Knit

Repeat these two rows. As you increase one stitch on each side of the cornerstitch, you will eventually create a corner. On row 4 you shoud make 6 buttonwholes by knitting two together, yarn over.
Knit 8 rows, and cast off.

Sleeves
Pick up six stitches from under the armpit of the body piece. By doing this, there´ll be no assembly when you´re done. Knit the garter stitch until the sleeves is 14 cm. BUT make sure that you decrease two stiches under the sleeve when the sleeve is 4 cm, 7 cm, 10 cm and 13 cm. When you reach 14 cm you purl every second row four times and cast off. Repeat on the other sleeve

Pick out some cute buttons and put them on the Candy Cardigan, and you´re done!
