Cosy Basket-Cardigan
We really enjoyed knitting this up. The stitch pattern is fairly easy, and it grows very quickly. Just about challenging enough;)
The stitch pattern is pretty to look at and gives you an airy garment.
Sizes
6 m (1-2 y) 3-4 y
Size 6 m for free below. The rest can be bought here.
Yarn
125 (150) 175 g (each ball is 25 g) Pickles Cash-Tweed, 2 strands.
Please note: The yarn has been discontinued. The closes yarn would be Pickles Cash Kid, single stranded, same amount.
Needles
Circular needles and DP needles US 5 and 7
Gauge
(for the stitch pattern)
20 s = 4”
The body
The cardigan is knitted from the bottom and up,
back and forth.
Cast on 85 stitches loosely on circular needles US 5. Knit 8 rows garter stitch.
Change to US 7 circular needles and knit one row.
Increase 10 stitches evenly throughout this row
= 95 stitches.
Start the stitch pattern from the wrong side.
Row 1:
P2 * Purl the second stitch on the left needles. Don´t slip it off the left needle. Purl the first stitch on the left needles, and lift both stitches off the left needle*.
Repeat from * to * until one stitch remains. P1.
Make sure that you pull the yarn out properly for both stitches to make the pattern airy enough.
Row 2:
K2 *Knit the second stitch on the left needle into the back loop (put your needle in as if you were to purl). Don´t lift the stitch off the needle. Knit the first stitch on the left needle in the normal manner (not through the back loop). Lift both stitches off the needle*.
Repeat from * to * until one stitch remains. K1.
Repeat row 1 and 2 until the piece measures 7.5 ” from the start. Separate the work into front and back pieces. End with a purl row.
Each front piece should have 21 stitches, and the back piece should have 53 stiches.
Work the stitch pattern like before (row 1 and 2), and start working the first front piece from the right side.
Bind off when the piece is 11.4 ”.
Start working the back piece. To make the stitch pattern correct, you´ll have to adjust the pattern a bit.
Start from the right side and knit like this:
Row 1:
K1. Repeat knit structure throughout the row.
Row 2:
P1. Repeat purl structure throughout the row.
Repeat these two rows until the back piece is 11.4”. Bind off.
Knit the other front piece like the first one.
Assemble the shoulders.
Sleeves
Pick up 47 stitches around the hole for the arms using DP needles US 7. See tip on how to here.
Start knitting from right under the arm, back and forth.
*Sleeve structure one
Repeat row 1 and 2 from the body piece.
When you have knitted about 1.5”, you´ll decrease like this, starting on a knit row:
Row 1:
K2tog. Repeat knit struckture until one stitch remains. K1
Row 2:
P2tog. Repeat purl struckture throughout the row.
Sleeve structure two
Repeat row 1 and 2 like you knitted them on the back piece.
When you have knitted about 1.5”, you´ll decrease like this on a knit row:
K2tog, K1. Repeat knit structure until two stitches remain. K2tog.*
Repeat from * to * until you have knitted Sleeve structure one 1 times and Sleeve structure two 1 times. You will now have decreased 4 times in total.
Start working in garter stitch with US needles 5 when the sleeve is about 6.3”.
Decrease 10 stitches evenly throughout the first row.
Knit 8 rows in total. Bind off.
Knit the other sleeve in the same way.
Front bands
It´s a bit tricky to pick up stitches along the sides, as the structure is fairly airy. Try your best;)
Pick up 128 stitches along the sides and the neck.
Knit garter stitch about 0.4”.
Make button holes on the left side like this:
K4, TO, K2tog *K6, YP, K2tog*.
Repeat from * to * until you have 4 button holes.
Keep on knitting until the front band measures 2”.
Knit another row of button holes.
Knit about 0.4” and bind off loosely.
Assemble the sleeves.
