A great top for girls or boys. Both tops are knitted top-down with an unusual raglan increase. The rib is quite stretchy, but you have to follow the gauge to make the construction right.

Garter s in the round: Knit 1 round, purl 1 round.
The top is knitted top-down, and the gauge needs to be followed closely to make the construction right. Are you usually a tight knitter, use larger needles. Both tops are knitted identical until the increase for sleeves is done.
Cast on 58 s on 16” circular needles US 7. Cast on loosely enought for the head to fit, but there should hold in the cast on to help keep the shape at the top.
Purl 1 round and place markers at the beginning of the round (marker 1), after 2 s (marker 2), 27 s after marker 2 (marker 3), 2 s after marker 3 (marker 4).
If the needles are large the first rounds, pull out the cord until it fits.
You’ll now have 2 s between 2 markers in each side. These 2 s markes the shoulder, and later become the sleeves. The s between these markers should ALWAYS be knitted in garter stitch.
All other s (for the body), should ALWAYS be knitted in rib pattern, K1, P1.
Because of the constant increasment, you need to pay attention, so that knit s are placed over k stitches and purl s over purl s in the rib pattern.
You shape the top by first increaseing on the outside of the shoulder markers, and then on the inside of the shoulder markers to creaste enough s for sleeves.
Increasing for front- and back piece
Increase on EVERY round on the outside of the 2 s in each side, just before marker 1 and 3, and just after marker 2 and 4 like this:
Knit garter to marker 2, make 1 right just after the marker.
Knit rib pattern to marker 3, make 1 left just before the marker.
Knit garter to marker 4, make 1 right just after the marker.
Knit rib pattern to marker 1, make 1 left just before the marker.
Repeat this round 10 times in total = 98 s.
Increasing for sleeves
On the inside of the markers for the shoulders. Just after marker 1 and 3, and just before marker 2 and 4 like this:
Round 1: Knit garter stitch between marker 1 and 2 and between 3 and 4.
Make 1 right just after marker 1, knit garter s to marker 2, make 1 left just before marker 2.
Knit rib pattern to marker 3, make 1 right just after marker 3, knit garter s to marker 4, make 1 left just before the marker. Knit rib pattern to end of round.
Repeat these 2 rounds 14 times in total = 30 s for each sleeve.
Both tops are knitted identical so far. Now go to the version you want to knit.
The body, girls
Knit round 1 (from above) one last time while casting off all sleeve stitches (the garter stitches) = 94 s.
Continue in stckinette in the round, and cast on 2 s under each sleeve by making backward loops on the first round = 98 s.
Contuínue in stockinette until the piece is 12.6”
Purl 1 round for fold up edge. Knit another 1.6” in stockinette and cast off loosely.
Fold up and sew to the inside.
Make sure that you sew loosely enough.
The body, boys
The body is knitted in the same rib pattern as the yoke. Place the s for sleeves on some scrap yarn, and knit the body s in the round. Cast on 3 new s under each sleeve on the first round by making backward loops = 100 s.
When the piece is about 13” you’ll swap to US 5 and knit 4 round in rib pattern before casting off.
Sleeves, boys version
Place the s onto DP needles US 7, and cast on 3 new s under the sleeve. Knit garter stitch in the round (Make sure to start correctly to make the ridges continuos). When the sleeve is about 5.5” swap to US 5 needles and knit 2 more ridges before casting off.
Knit the other sleeve.
Sew under the sleeves.
