Fun-kit Mix
The Norwegian Winter is long and cold, and alpaca is just perfect for this climate. It´s soft and warmer than wool. The palette is also quite stunning and it´s easy to make harmonic matches.
The yarn comes in 100 g skeins, and you need 4 different colours. We´ve made quite a few garments so you should be able to knit up all the yarn as long as you mix and match a bit.
Sizes
6/12m (1/2) 3/4 (5/6) y
Yarn
Pickles Pure Thick Alpaca
400 g (100 g of 4 different colours)
If you mix the colours you should have enough yarn for hat, mittens and scarf or neckwarmer (or maybe even both)
Needles
15.7" circular needles (23.6" as well for the neckwarmer in size 5/&) and DP needles US 9.
DP needles US 8 for the mittens
Gauge
14 s
Hat
Cast on 48 (54) 60 (66) s on circular needles US 9. Use colour you wish to make the main colour.
Knit 4 rows back and forth
You´ll now make airflaps by knitting and turning (If you´re unfamiliar with turing try looking it up on youtube.com):
K 11 (13) 15 (17), turn,
K 6 (8) 9 (11) turn.
*Knit until you´ve reached the s where you made the turn, knit it. Turn.*
Repeat from * to * 10 times.
Knit the entire row. Now repeat the paragraph above on the other side.
Knit 6 rows.
Start knitting in the round.
***
*Slip 1, K5 in a pattern colour*
Repeat from * to * four full rounds.
Knit one round and purl one round in the main colour.
**K3
*Slip 1, K5 in a pattern colour*
Repeat from * to * until 3 s remains, slip 1, K2 in the pattern colour*
**
Repeat from ** to ** four full rounds
Knit one round and purl one round in the main colour.
Repeat from *** 2 (2 1/2) 2 1/2 (2 1/2) times = 4 (5) 5 (5) fstripes of colour.
Continue where you are in the pattern above, but decrease on the second round of pattern colour. Knit like this using the pattern colour:
SSK, K1, K2tog (Note that on the three larger sizes you´ll have to start with K2tog, K1, and end with SSK)
You´ll end up with 3 s in pattern colour instead of 5. Knit the last 2 rounds like usual, but replace 5 with 3.
Use the main colour and K2tog throughout the next round,.
Purl 1 round.
Put the yarn through the remaining stitches and pull. Assemble.
Round neckwarmer
Knitted back and forth sideways. For the prettiest result use provisional cast on at the start and kitchener´s stitch to assemble. If this is too complicated, cast on like usual and cast off at the end.
Cast on 20 (28) 38 (46) s on circular needles US 9 using the main colour.
Knit 5 (7) 7 (9) rows.
*Change colour, continue in stockinette.
K 12 s, turn, knit until the end of the row
K 10 s, turn, knit until the end of the row
K 12 s, turn, knit until the end of the row
Change to the main colour and knit 4 (6) 6 (8) rows.*
Repeat from * to * 15 times in total.
Knit 1 row.
Use kitchener´s stitch to assemble with the other side (or cast off) the bottom 13 (19) 25 (31) s.
Knit the remaining s for about 1" (cast off the remaining s from the provisional cast on).
K 2 (3) 5 (6), K2tog, YO, K 3 (4) 6 (7).
Knit 12. Cast off.
Slip through scarf
Cast on 16 (18) 20 (22) s on US 9 needles.
Knit back and forth for about 2.7 (3.1) 3.5 (3.9)".
Put every second s on to a spare needle, 8 (9) 10 (11) s on each needle.
Knit each needle in stockinette for about 2 (2) 2.3 (2.3)" (use a different colour if you´d like).
Place the s back to the same needle in the original order.
Knit 9.8 (10.6) 11.8 (12.6)" (we changed colours half way)
Put every second s on to a spare needle, 8 (9) 10 (11) s on each needle.
Knit each needle in stockinette for about 2 (2) 2.3 (2.3)" (use a different colour if you´d like).
Knit back and forth for about 2.7 (3.1) 3.5 (3.9)".
Sew along the opening in one of the narrow parts to give it more hold.
Mittens
The mittens will felt a bit in use, but this will make them even former.
Cast on 20 (20) 24 (28) s on DP needles US 8. Equal amount of s on 4 needles. Needle 1 and 2 maske one side, needle 3 and 4 the other.
Knit for about 1.6 (2) 2.3 (2.7)".
Continue in stockinette. Knit a round where you make holes for the cord by repeating:
K2 tog, YO
Make room for thumb when you´ve knitted - (1.2) 1.6 (2)" (no thumb for the smallest size).
Knit like this:
Use some scrap yarn in a contrasting colour and knit the - (4) 5 (6) first s on needle 1.
(Place the thumb differently on the other mitten by knitting the - (4) 5 (6) last s in a contrasting yarn )
Continue in the main colour.
Start decreaseing when the mittens are 3.5 (3.9) 4.3 (4.7)":
*K2tog, knit until 2 s remains on the next needle, SSK*
Repeat from * to * on the next two needles.
Keep on knitting like this until 8 s remains. Use the kitchener´s stitch to assemble (or cast off and assemble).
Thumb
Use 2 DP needles and pick up the s around the contrasting yarn. Loosen the contrating yarn to make a hole. Knit in stockinette in the round for about - (1.2) 1.6 (2)". K2tog on the next round. Put the yarn through the remaining s and pull.
Make a cord.
