Knit stockinette in the round for 0.8”.
Use the metallic yarn and purl one round and knit one round to mark the fold up edge.
Measure the piece from here.

Continue in stockinette in alpaca until the piece is 9.8" .
Knit 2 more rounds on US 5 before starting the pattern.
Part the piece into front and back pieces, with 69 s on each piece.

Shaping the front and back pieces:
The width will be reduced to almost half of what it was in stockinette because of the diamond-stitch.
To make this dress successfull you HAVE to follow the gauge listed for the pattern.
The metallic yarn that will lay horizontally across when doing a slip 5 with yarn in back with the correct gauge.
Concentrate on this especially during the first repetition, as you need to tighten the project quite a bit.
We have a video of the technique in Norwegian here if you need to see it live: http://www.pickles.no/blingstrikk/
Also make sure not to twist the metallic yarn too much.

Back piece
Row 1(from the wrong side): P1 in metallic, slip 3 with yarn in back (from here on short: WYIB)
P1, slip 5 WYIB*
Repeat from * to * until 5 s remain. P1, slip 3, P1. (First repetition you need to cut the yarn here)

Row 2 and 3: Use alpaca and knit in stockinette.

Row 4: K1 in metallic * Use your right hand needle and tuck it under the metallic yarn laying across 2 rows below from the front and under, insert the same needle into the next s on the left needles and K1. Make sure to pull the new stitch through, so the horizontal yarn is pulled up into an upside down V-shape.
Slip 5 s WYIB*
Repeat from * to * until 2 s remain, tuck the needle under the metallic yarn one last time and knit like decribed above (this last one is the most tricky one). K1.

Row 5: P1 in metallic *Slip 1 s with yarn in FRONT, slip 5 WYIB*
Repeat from * to * until 2 s remain, slip 1 with yarn in FRONT, P1.

Row 5 and 6: Use alpaca and knit in stockinette.

Row 8: K1 in metallic, slip 3 WYIB * Use your right hand needle and tuck it under the metallic yarn laying across 2 rows below from the front and under, insert the same needle into the next s on the left needles and K1. Make sure to pull the new stitch through, so the horizontal yarn is pulled up into an upside down V-shape. Slip 5 s WYIB*
Repeat from * to *, but on the last repetition, slip 3 in stead of 5 s WYIB, and then K1 in metallic.

Repeat these 8 rows until the back piece is about 5.1”. Stop after row 4 or 8. Continue in metallic.
Purl 1 row. On the next row, slip 1, *K2tog*. Repeat from * to* until end of row.
Cast off.

Front piece
Repeat the 8 pattern rows until the front piece is about 3.5” . Stop after row 4 or 8.
Continue on row 5 or 1 depending on where you left off on the first 15 s. Knit until  the piece is as long as the back piece. Stop after row 4 or 8.
Continue in metallic.
Purl 1 row.
On the next row, slip 1, *K2tog*. Repeat from * to* until end of row.
Purl 1 row.
Knit 1 row where you make button holes lke this: K2, YO, K2tog, knit until 4 s remain, K2tog, YO, K2.
Cast off.
Repeat on the last 15 s of the front piece.

The remaining s in the middel should be knitted like this, start from the wrong side:
Purl 1 row. On the next row, slip 1, *K2tog*. Repeat from * to* until end of row.
Cast off.

Sew buttons on to the back piece. Fold up the lower edge and assemble neatly.
Make sure to damp/iron the skirt (not the rest) to even it out.
