MITTENS
Cast on 24 stitches on US needles 10 1/2
Knit like this:
*Purl 7 rounds, knit 7 rounds*
Repeat from * to * 3 times in total.

Knit 3 stitches. Place these 3 stitches as well as the 3 last stitches of the previous round (6 stitches in a row) on a spare needles or some scrap yarn.

Purl 1 round.
Make 2 new stitches in a row (under the thumb-opening) by making backward loops on the needle.
Purl 6 rounds.
Knit 7 rounds
Purl 7 rounds.

Knit 6 rounds
Decrease like this on the next round:
*Knit 2 stitches, K2tog*

Purl 6 rounds.
Tighten the remaining stitches.

Thumb
Make 2 new stitches in a row (by making backward loops). Knti in the round until the thumb is 2". Tighten the remaining stitches.

HAT
Cast on 44 s on US needles 11.
*Purl 7 rounds, knit 7 rounds*
Repeat from * to * 4 times.

Purl 7 rounds
Knit 1 round and decrease 8 s evenly
Knit 5 rounds
Knit 1 round and decrease 12 s evenly
Purl 6 rounds.
On the next round P2tog until end of round.
Tigthen the remaining stitches.
