Icelandic Sunrise Shawl

The name of the shawl comes from the stitch pattern, which looks like rows of sunrises.

Yarn
2 skeins Abuelita Merino Worsted

Needles
Long circular needles US 15

Cast on 8 stitches on 10 mm/US 15 needles.

Row 1:
* K 1, YO * Repeat from * to * throughout the row.

Don´t YO before the first stitch, just start knitting like it says in the pattern.
If you want larger holes in your «sun», you can always twist the yarn two times around your needles for your YOs.

Row 2:

Slip the first 4 stitches, and release the YO inbetween (from the previous row) (You slip as if you were to purl). You now have 4 large loops/stitches on your right needles. Put the 4 stitches on to your left needle. Leave the loops on the left needle while knitting them together like so: K1, P 1, K 1, P 1, K1, P1 through the same 4 stitches. Between every stitch you should pull the yarn out properly, making sure that you get 6 even stitches on your right needle.
Tip: When purling, we recommend using the technique Norwegian Purl, meaning that you´ll hold your yarn in the same spot as when you´re knitting. Also when you purl, make sure the yarn is in front of your needle.

It´s just at the start and the end of the row that you´ll make 6 stitches through the 4 loops. For the rest of the row (except the first row), you´ll work in the same way, but you´ll only end up with 4 stitches like so:
Slip 4 stiches, release the YOs, place the 4 loops on to the left needles, K1, P1, K1, P1 through the 4 stitches, before lifting the four new stitches off the left needle.

REMEMBER to make 6 stitches on at the end of the row. The first two and last two extra stitches makes another sunrise on your next row.

Repeat row 1 and 2 until you´ve reached a desired length.

Finish off by knitting row 1 (If you´ve been making two wraps for your YO, you should NOT do this on this row, just one wrap!), and then cast off. This gives you a wavy edge that almost looks like crochet.
