Impress dress for little girls

We can´t get enough og the woven sitch! In this project we´ve used different types of yarn, and we love the lacy yarn effect. This pattern fits a size 80 - 86. Dress it up for a party or down for a summer day, either way it looks impressive.

Gauge: Stockinette with Svale is 21 stitches pr 4 inch.

Materials:

Svale, 3 balls. Scraps of Lacy Løvegarn from HP yarn in pink, peach and grey. Surya from Bouton d´Or as base colour in the woven stitch, we used less than half a ball.

If you want to use scrap yarn for this project we recommend a fingering weight yarn as base (suitable for a US size 2 needle) and a little thicker yarn (US size 6 - 7) for the woving.

Pattern:

With Svale cast on 164 stitches on a US size 2 or 3 needle. Knit the garter stitch for 6 rows. Then switch to needle size 4 and start knitting stockinette in the round. Place marker (PM) like this:

Knit 30 stitches, PM. Knit 22, PM. Knit 60, PM. Knit 22, PM.

Knit until your piece measures just over 1 inch. Knit a decrease round: Knit until 2 stitches before your first marker. Ssk. Knit until next marker, K2tog. Repeat for the other side.

Do a decrease round every 0,4 inch, 17 times all together. There are 96 stitches left on the needle. Knit until your piece measures 12 inches. Cast of under each arm like this: Knit until the first marker. Knit 6 more stitches, then cast off 8 stitches. Repeat for the other side. Remember to tighten the first cast off stitch for a neat result.

Knit until 14 stitches past the last marker. You are now in the middle of the back. Switch to Surya Bouton d´Or. Continue in stockinette. When you get to the arm opening, cast on 24 new stitches over it and continue the round. Knit until the other arm opening and repeat. When you get to the end of the round turn and knit 1 garter row. (Knit back and forth from now on)

1. row with lace yarn: *K1, sl1wyib* across row
Next row: *sl1wyif, K1* across row.

Switch back to surya and knit one row, while decreasing 8 stitches evenly distributed across row.
Knit 1 row.

2. row with lace yarn: *sl1wyib, K1* across row.
Next row: *K1, sl1wyif.* across row.

Switch back to surya and knit one row, while decreasing 8 stitches evenly distributed across row.
Knit 1 row.

Repeat "1. row with lace yarn". Then switch back to surya and knit one row, while decreasing 12 stitches evenly distributed across row.
Knit 1 row.

Repeat "2. row with lace yarn". Then switch back to surya and knit one row, while decreasing 12 stitches evenly distributed across row.
Knit 1 row.

Repeat "1. row with lace yarn". Then switch back to surya and knit one row, while decreasing 16 stitches evenly distributed across row.
Knit 1 row.

Repeat "2. row with lace yarn". Then switch back to surya and knit one row, while decreasing 16 stitches evenly distributed across row.
Cast off. Crochet a loop for button.

Sew a button to the other side. Sew together at the bottom of the skirt and weave in all ends. Rinse the dress, shape and dry flat.

I spotted this on flickr, very cute. I haven't tried the woven stitch before but really like that effect. Hope to give this pattern a try sometime (so many on my to do list).

This is so adorable! thankyou!

This is darling! I've just started making it and I'm wondering about the decrease directions. The directions say "Do a decrease round every 0,4 inch..." I'm confused by the zero and comma--is it supposed to be zero "point" four or does it mean 1/4 inch or what?? Thanks for any clarification.

juli 4, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterEllen Higgins

Yes, zero point four. 0.4. We use comma as divider in Norway :) So that is almost half an inch between decreases. Good luck :)

Love the dress but am a bit confused by some of the abbreviations... what does "sl1wyib" and "sl1wyif" mean? I'm a novice knitter and hope I can manage the woven stitch!

juli 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterAlexia

Alexia, those abbreviations means "slip one with yarn in back", and "slip one one with yarn in front". It´s really easy, we´re sure you´ll manage. Happy knitting!

Thank you so much for sharing this pattern..I just LOVE it...

I loved the dress. However, the pattern has no size. I need a size 8 pattern for my 6 year old granddaughter. Can anyone help?
Thanks

I loved the pattern. However the instructions are not sized. I need a size 8 for a 6 year old child.
Thanks

september 26, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterCharlotte Cole

Thanks for your nice comments! Charlotte, This dress is made in one size only. Making patterns is the most time consuming thing that we do, and as Pickles is purely based on spare time effort, we cannot meet all the pattern requests that we get.

Hope you can figure it out yourself by yourself by using the gauge and a garment in the size you want to make to see how many more stitches you´ll
need. Measure chest, Lenght from bottom up to under the arms and around the bottom of the dress. Then decrease evenly all the way up to under the arms.

Best of luck!

I loved this and decided to make it into a tank top for my daughter. I needed a different size (bigger) so I adjusted accordingly and it turned out TERRIFIC! :) Thanks for the lovely pattern!

I love this, especially the collar. I want a big girl version! Any chance of adapting the pattern to create a matching mommy version?

Saw this on Ravelry and think it is beautiful! I would also like it in a size 8. If anyone has modified the instructions for a larger size, could you share it? Thanks!

februar 25, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterKaren

Hi Karen, we are planning to make more sizes of this dress in our own yarn soon :)

februar 26, 2010 | Registered Commenterpickles

Hello,

I was wondering if you knew of a place online I could purchase the yarns for this pattern.

Thanks!

mars 2, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterTiffany

I was wondering the length of the circular needles.

juni 4, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterCatherine

Is there a reason why all decreases are not k2tog. Why use ssk which creates a bar? Thanks!

juni 6, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterCatherine

Catherine, you can K2tog if you rather want that. :)

For the size I went to the internet and looked 80-86 sizes in Europe and i fount an interesting chart. this is for 12-18 months.
After knitting the gauge with number 4 needles, I meassured it and I had to change it to 5 1/2 mm = 9 US needle.
If I am using this size of needle for the woven stich, shall I use No, 3 US needke for the garter stich? I am also a beguiner, I have a theacher that guides me for the decreases and everything I don't understand.
Thanks for clarifying all our doubts.
I live in Guatemala City Central America and sometimes it is dificult to find the right size of needles.

The abreviation s11wyufm has a number 1 extra, am I correct?

september 2, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterAnnabella A

Hi Annabella, sorry for the late repy on your first post, we must have missed it. Hope you are well into your project :) Dont worry so much about needle size for the garter, it will look fine using the same needles too :)

The abreviation says sL1wyif, meaning slip one with yarn in front, so you are right if you meant to only slip one stitch.
