Abuelita Merino Worsted
100 g

16" ciruclar needles and DP needles US 7

Gauge per 4"
Stockinette: 18 s / 28 rows
Start knitting the ear flaps.
Cast on 4 s on a DP needle and knit an ic-ord (look it up on youtube if you are unfamiliar with it.):
*K4. Slide the s from the left to the right side of the neeedle with yarn in back, and knit the s from the same direction again*.
Repeat between * and * until the i-cord is 5.5 (5.9) 6.3 (6.7) 7".

Increase for ear flaps.
From now on knit the first s of the row through the back loop, and slip the last s of the row with yarn in front.

On the next row knit like this (from the same direction as for the i-cord):
K2, make 1 s (left or right, look this up on youtube if you are unfamiliar with it), K2.

Row1 (from the wrong side): K2, purl until 2 s remain, K2.
Row 2: K2, make 1 right, knit until 2 s remains, make 1 left, K2.

Repeat row 1 and 2 until you have 17 (19) 21 (23) 23 s.
Put the work aside and knit another flap.

Cast on 14 (16) 18 (20) 22 s on the circular needle (makes the front), knit the first flap, place marker (PM), cast on another 8 (10) 12 (14) 16 s (makes the back) by making backward loops, knit the other flap, PM = 56 (64) 72 (80) 84 s in total.

On the next round, purl all the new stitches casted on, and knit the ear flaps. Continue in stockinette over all stitches until the piece is 3.1 (4) 4.7 (5.5) 6.3" measured in the front.

On the next round decrease like this:
K 1 (0) 1 (0) 2 s past the marker at the beginning/end of the round, K2tog 6 (8) 8 (10) 9 times in a row, knit until 2 (3) 2 (3) 1s remain before the next marker, K2tog 6 (8) 8 (10) 9 times in a row, knit the rest of the round.

Continue in stockinette for another 1 (1) 1.2 (1.6) 1.6".

On the next round K 1 (0) 1 (0) 2s past the marker at the beginning/end of the round. Knit 4 rows in stockinette over the next 6 (8) 8 (10) 9 s. Cut the yarn, leaving a 8" long bit for assembly.

Knit the next 16 (16) 20 (20) 24 s onto DP needle for the first ear.

Use kitcherner's stitch and assemble the 6 (8) 8 (10) 9 s you knitted back and forth with the 6 (8) 8 (10) 9 s following the first ear using the 8" long yarnbit.

Pick up 4 s along this middle section between the ears, adding them to the first ear. PM in the middle of these 4 s and after 10 (10) 12 (12) 14 s to mark the sides of the ear. The start of the round is counted from the marker with the stitches that were picked up.
Knit stockinette in the round for 3 (4) 4 (5) 5 rounds.

Decrease like this on every second round:
*K2, SSK. Knit until 3 s remain before the next marker, K2tog, K1*.
Repeat between * and * until end of round = 4 s decreased.

When you have decreased a total of 3 (3) 4 (4) 5 times, continue like this:

*SSK, K2tog*.
Repeat between * and * until end of round = 4 s decreased.
Use kitchener's stitch to assemble the remaining s, or pull a tapestry needle through them and sew.
Make another ear in the same way.
