You don´t have too look like a big lump of wool during winter. Winter accessories can be both elegant and feminine. We´ve made these mittens as well as the matching Winter turban to go with them.
100 g Abuelita Merino Worsted
We´ve used Bear.
DP needle US 9
4" = 17 stitches
You can knit the brioche stitch in different ways. We do it this way, as it is easier on the shoulders. If you can´t figure it out, try looking up "brioche stitch" on youtube.com.
Cast on 27 (31) stitches. Knit one row. Knit in brioche back and forth:
Slip 1. * Knit one into the row below, knit one*
Repeat from * to * throughout the row.
* Knit one, knit one into the row below.*
Repeat from * to * until two stitches remain. Knit 2.
Repeat the two rows until your cuff is about 4.3 (4.7)"
Start knitting the garter stitch in the round.
Make sure you always have the same amount of stitches on both sides of the mitten. Needles 1 and 2 are one side, and needles 3 and 4 are the other.
On the first round K2tog 5 times throughout the round.
Knit 5 (7) rounds. Stop 1 stitch before reaching the end of needle 4.
See how we increase in the photo tutorial further down in this post.
Increase 1 (Make 1 right, M1r), k2, increase 1 (Make i left, M1l), knit until 1 stitch remains on the second needle, M1r, K2, M1l, knit the rest of the round.
Knit 4 rounds
Increase in the same way. Knit 4 more rounds. Stop 1 stitch before reaching the end of needle 4.
You will now increase in the same way on one side and increase for thumb on the other.
Remember to make the thumbs on different sides to give both hands a mitten;)
This first increase will actually be identical to the previous rounds of increasement, but we recommend that you follow the tutorial, and place stitch markers, as it will be more complicated from here on.
Increase for thumb:
Put a stitch marker on your right needle.
Lift the yarn between the stitches like so.
Twist to the right (M1r) and put the stitch on the left needle. Knit it.
Knit 2. Place a stitch marker on your left needle.
Lift the yarn between the stitches like so:
Twist it to the left (M1l) and put it on the left needle. Knit it.
Increase in the same way as before on the other side.
You will increase 4 more times just after the first stitch marker, and just before the other. Increase every third round 2 (3) times, and every second round 3 (2) times. It will look like this in the end:
Put the 12 stitches for thumb on a thread like so:
Keep on knitting the mitten, and cast on 2 extra stitches below the thumb (between needle 1 and 4).
You will now have 32 (36) stitches.
Knit in the round until the piece is 16.3 (16.7)" from where you started knitting the garter stitch.
Now start decreasing. Decrease every third round like this:
Knit until 2 stitches remain on needle 4, SSK, K2tog, knit until 2 stitches remain on needle 2, SSK, K2tog, knit the rest of the round.
When 12 stitches remain, decrease on every round. When 4 stitches remain, cut the yarn and put the thread through the reamining stitches. Assemble.
Put the stitches for the thumb back on the needles, and cast on two ore stitches under the thumb:
Knit in the round until you have knitted 2 (2.5)". Knit 2 tog until 4 stitches remain.
Cut the yarn and put the thread through the reamining stitches. Assemble.
Assemble the cuff as neatly as you can. Knit another mitten, and make sure to place the thumb on the other side;)
