Plain girlie hoodie

Size
1 (2-3) 4-5 (6-7) 8-9 years
2-3 for free here, the rest can be purchased in the Pickles shop.

Yarn
Pickles Organic Cotton, THIN
150 (200) 250 (350) 400 g

Abuelita Baby Merino
100 (200) 200 (200) 200 g

Needles
US 9 circular and DP needles

Gauge
4” =14 s

Chest measurements
9.5 (11) 12 (12.5) 13.3 inches

With one strand of each yarn, cast on 128 s on circular needles US 9.  Knit garter in the round. Knit 16 s, place marker (PM), knit 32 s, PM, knit 32 s, PM, knit 32, PM. Continue in garter for about 2 inches. Switch to stockinette, decrease in the following manner every 0.8 inch:

Decrease round: knit until 2 s left before the first marker, slip 2 s knitwise, put them back on the left needle and knit them together through back loops. Knit until the next marker. K 2 tog. Repeat for the other side.

Repeat the decrease round every 0.8 inch until you have 6 s left between the markers in each side. (=76 s) Bind off the 6 s in each side and put aside while making the arms.

Arms
Cast on 24 s on US 9 PD needles. Knit garter in the round for 1 inch. Continue in stockinette. PM on each side of the first and the last stitch on the round. This is in the middle under the arm. Make 1 stitch on each side of the markers (2 new stitches each time) every 2 inch 4 times alltogether (=32 s) Continue until the arm measures about 10.5 inches. Bind off 6 s under the arm. Knit another.

Raglan decrease
Line up all the parts on the circular needle, and PM between the parts, 4 marks altogether. The round starts in the front, by the right arm. Knit stockinette in the round. Knit until you are 11 s past the last (4th) marker. Purl 10 s. (This is the stitches for the neck opening edge, and are to be knitted in garter stitch from now on out.) Knit the last 11 s on the round.

On the next round decrease like this:
Round 1: Knit until 3 s is left before the first marker, slip 2 s knitwise, put them back on the left needle and knit them together through back loops. Knit 1 s past the same marker. K2tog. Repeat for the 3 other markers.
Round 2: Knit.
Repeat the two rounds another 2 (3) 4 (5) 6 times.

Turn on a round 1 when you get to the middle of the neck opening and knit back and forth from now on. Don´t forget to knit the edge bands in garter. Beware that you will have to purl on one side of the opening, and knit on the other to get the garter ridges right, due to the turning in the middle of it.

Row 1: Purl.
Row 2: Knit until 3 s is left before the first marker, slip 2 s knitwise, put them back on the left needle and knit them together through back loops. Knit 1 s past the same marker. K2tog. Repeat for the 3 other markers.

Repeat the two rows until you have used all the stitches that you have on the front pieces. (Leave the two stitches before the marker to make the raglan look good at the top. (=40 (44) 48 (48) 56 s) PM on each side of the two s in the middle back. Knit three rows of stockinette. On the next row from the right side knit like this:

Increase row: Knit until the first marker. Make 1 s. Knit past the next marker, Make 1 s.
Purl 1 row.

Repeat 9 times. (= 62 s) Continue in stockinette until the hood measures 8.5 inches from where you started the increases. Assemble with Kitchener stitch, use garter technique for the edge and stockinette technique for the rest. Sew the under arm seams and weave in all loose ends.

Thanks for another great pattern!

I'm assuming that this hoodie is knit holding one strand of each of the yarns together. Is that correct? I couldn't find it written in the pattern, but I'm thinking it would need to be in order to get the required gauge.

Yes, you are right Alison, we will update the pattern with the information, thanks!

This is wonderful! Will you have more color choices for the Abuelita yarn soon? There are so many wonderful colors available for the Thin Organic Cotton but not many for the Abuelita right now.
Or even better: Can you suggest which colors would match well together if I want to knit it with "one" color? I have a hard time finding a color for each yarn. I used this combination for the plain vest before so I know sometimes it fits completely, sometimes you can see the two different yarns. Thanks

Have a look at this link:

You can use both baby merino and 3-ply ;)

i'm a little confused when reading "repeat for the other side" when decreasing round. i have 4 PMs, and i understand that i knit until i get to two before the first PM and knit them together (slip knitwise, put back on left needle, knit through back loops), then knit until two before the next PM and k2tog. does "repeat for the other side" mean i then knit to two before the next PM and knit through back loops and then two before the last PM k2tog? this is what i did and am realizing i will not have 8 sts between PMs this way. help!
thanks!!

Hi you decrease on each side of the two markers in each side (not before) and then repeat ;)

juli 11, 2011 | Registered Commenterpickles

Hi!
I too am having problem figuring out the decrease and the 4 Markers. Do i decrease at each side of the 4 markers, or is it decrease on each side of the 2 markers (1st and 3rd?). i think the confusion is because the meaning of "each side of the marker" and each side of the Hoodie (left and right?)
I have been ripping twice, and getting more and more confused.
Thanks!
i love the pattern and would like to complete this project.

Hi, sorry about the late reply, i missed this. Decrease on each side of the 2 first markers, then repeat for the other side ;)

august 12, 2011 | Registered Commenterpickles

hello, nice pattern! but what do you mean with bind off the 6 stiches in between the markers. Is this cast off?
tnx for the help

Repeat the two rows until you have used all the stitches that you have on the front pieces. (Leave the two stitches before the marker to make the raglan look good at the top.> also leave the stitches in garterstitch, no?
tnx

"Repeat the decrease round every 0.8 inch until you have 6 s left between the markers in each side. (=76 s) Bind off the 6 s in each side and put aside while making the arms."

what it meant by the ....until you have 6 s left between markers on each side??? what side are you talking about and what markers....and is there supposed to be 76 stitches left when done decreasing on the circular needle?....and am I binding off or just putting the stitches on a stitch holder and setting aside?

thanks

We´re talking about the sides of the project;) Please read the pattern more carefully to see where the markers are placed;) Bind off means bind off. 76 s when done decreasing.

What are the approximate lengths for each age, from the bottom to the point where you start the arms. I dont want it to be too short.

I'm so glad I looked at these comments before I got started. I doubled the yarn and made mine using Moda Dea Dream in Waterlilly. Turned out great in a super soft pink. Adorable! Thanks for the pattern.

Im confused on how to add the arms to the raglan. I know the pattern says to line it all up. But instill don't know how to integrate it into the piece. I can't find anywhere in the pattern that actually references that.

august 27, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAllison

Allison it is a classic ragølan decrease. We suggest looking it up on youtube as it is a little hard to explain, and probably a lot easier to see. The point is to knit all the parts onto the same needle.

august 27, 2012 | Registered Commenterpickles

Thanks for the great pattern! I was just wondering whether it was possible to knit this with just one yarn. If yes, which yarn would you recommend?

november 27, 2012 | Unregistered Commentermary

Thanks! Worsted Abuelita Merino or Pickles Pure THICK alpaca will work fine single stranded :)
