Plain vest

This vest is knit in one strand each of cotton and merino wool and is just right for when the air gets chilly again after summer. It´s knitted on big needles, and we love both the look of it and how quick it went. And beat this: It has one end only to weave in! :)

Sizes

1 (2) 3-4 (5-6) 7-8 year
1 year for free. 2, 3-4, 5-6 and 7-8 years can be bought in the Pickles shop.

Yarn
100 (150) 200 (200) 250 g Pickles Organic Cotton, DK
100 (100) 100 (100) g Abuelita Baby Merino Lace

Needles

US 9 circular or single pointed needles

Gauge
4”= 14 s and 21 rows (stockinette)

Two rows make one garter ridge. Decreases is done by knitting 2 stitches together.

Cast on 80 s on US 9 needles. Knit 7 garter ridges. Continue in stockinette, but knit the 5 first and 5 last stitches of each row in garter stitch for edges. This goes for the rest of the pattern even if it is not mentioned on each row.

Knit until your piece measures 8 inches. Then on your next row from the right side knit like this: Knit 18 s, bind off 6 s, knit 32 s, bind off 6 s, knit 18 s.

The rest of the vest is knitted in garter stitch

On the next row knit until the arm opening, make 16 new stitches over the arm opening. Knit until the other arm opening and repeat.

On the next row make a button hole like this: K2, YO, K2tog. K until end of row.

K back.

Decrease
On the next row K while decreasing 18 s evenly. K 3 rows.

On the next row K while decreasing 14 s evenly. K 3 rows.

On the next row K while decreasing 12 s evenly. K 3 rows.

On the next row make another button hole, and decrease 8 s evenly. K 2 rows. Bind off.

Hi,
Love the vest, so so cute!
Would you mind sharing what colors were used on the super cute model?
It was a bit difficult from the photos.
Thanks much!

Hello,

LOVE the vest. Love most of your patterns, really, but as a newish knitter haven't had the guts to try many of them.

I'm stuck at the instructions to "make 16 new stitches over the arm opening." Can you please elaborate on how to do this?

Thanking you kindly,

Rai

In regards to earlier post - I figured it out. Just like you said it: "make 16 new stitches over the arm hole!"

I actually don't get the part "make 16 new stitches over the arm hole" Can someone teach me, please. Is it done by increasing???

oktober 10, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterSue

Sue,

I didn't get it either, then I just tried by casting on 16 new stitches onto my needle (just like you do for the 1st row of a project). As soon as you do this, you'll see that it makes a hole under the new stitches that you just created on your needle, thus making the arm hole. It's so much simpler than i was making it out to be - but i think you have to do it to see what i mean.

Good luck! ("ReganClare" on Ravelry, by the way).

Rai,

Thanks for your advice. I did try casting on 16 new stitches, however, I find the the arm hole is quite tight and small. Did you have the same problem?

oktober 10, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterSue

Sue, do you have the right gauge? Try casting on the new stitches by making backward loops onto your needle with the working yarn. Be careful not to make them to tight.

Georganna, just click the link under "sizes" in the pattern above, and it will take you to the shop :)

I wanted to purchase the pattern for the children's Plain Vest, however, the order form indicated it would be delivered by 'Shipping', not download-able in PDF, which is what I wanted. Is it available as a download? Hope so, as I am travelling not able to have it shipped to me. thanks, Sue

Do you have chest measurements for various sizes of childrens patterns that are shown by ages . . . I particularly wondered what is the chest measurement for the Plain Vest pattern sizes, 2, 3 and 4. I couldn't find that information on the website. Thanks. Sue

Hi Sue, We use www.yarnstandards.com for measurements :) The model wears a size 1 yrs, so it can be used for a long time.

I love the pattern but on reading it, it looks like the armhole is just 1 row in size based on the pattern. But looking at the photos, it looks like the arm hole is all the way up the garter stitch section.

Could you explain this please?

februar 9, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterClaire

Claire, it is 1 row in a way, but enough new stitches to stretch all the way up ;) It´ll all be very clear to you as you knit it!

februar 10, 2011 | Registered Commenterpickles

Hi - I just finished knitting this vest to find that my decreasing technique was terrible. Since there were no specifics on how to decrease I did it in the middle of the piece and this turned out terribly. It's hard to tell how to decrease "evenly" - is there a recommended plan of attack for this? In detail? I'm also assuming decrease 18 means I k2tog 9 times. Help? Thanks!

I adore this pattern. Any idea whether it or something similar exist in adult sizes or whether it can be scaled up. Love it, love it.

februar 24, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterkestypes

I too would love an adult size (very much!)! Or even larger children's sizes too.

februar 24, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterRai

Love the vest! Thank you for the pattern! I have to say, though, as cute as the vest is, your daughter is cuter! She's ADORABLE!!!

februar 27, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSue

Thanks!! I could not agree more :)

februar 28, 2011 | Registered Commenterpickles

Thank you for sharing the pattern !
I've just finished the vest for my newborn to come, adapting the measures with smaller needles... I kept the colour, which is my favourite, and put wooden buttons : this is just so cute !!!
Thanks again ;)
