Sideways braid bolero

Materials
Four skeins of Abuelita Merino Worsted, Olive

Needles
US 10 ½ and US 15 DPN`s, US 19 circular needles.

Gauge
Increasing as you go. Gauge is not so important, the bolero will fit most.

Cast on 56 stitches on US 10 ½ DPN´s using two strands of yarn. Knit in the round to start with.

Round 1-2:  *P 1, K 12, P1* Repeat until end of round.
Round 3:  *P 1, Place 4 stitches onto a cable needle and keep in front of your work. K 4, K 4 from cable needle, K 4, P 1* Repeat until end of round.
Round 4-8: *P 1, K 12, P1* Repeat until end of round.
Round 9: *P 1, K 4, Place 4 stitches onto a cable needle and keep in back of your work. K 4, K4 from cable needle, P 1* Repeat until end of round.
Round 10-12: *P 1, K 12, P1* Repeat until end of round.

Repeat all rounds 2 times (=24 rounds)

Switch to US 15 needles, and repeat round 1 - 12 one more time. Then switch to US 19 circular needles and repeat the rounds again. From now on you will be knitting back and forth.

Continue in the same pattern, but since you are now knitting back and forth you need to knit the rounds 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 as follows:

*K 1, P 12, K 1* Repeat until end of round.

The other rows is knitted as before. Repeat all rows 3 times. Then start knitting in the round again. Knit round 1 - 12 one time before you switch to US 15 needles. Knit the same rounds one time and then switch to US 10 ½. Knit round 1 - 12 2 times and cast off.

Pick up 28 stitches around each sleeve and knit the moss stitch for 4 rows. Cast off and weave inn all ends.

Hey, I'm following this pattern right now, and on line 9 it says:

*P 1, K 4, Place 4 stitches onto a cable needle and keep in back of your work. K 4 from cable needle, K 4, P 1*

i'm a little confused, because if i place 4 stitches on the cable needle and then knit 4 from the cable needle, nothing happens, it's just unnecessarily transfers the stitches. I don't want to frog my work -- please help!

thank you so much, i'm so excited to make this bolero!

Hi!

I love your blog, and I love knitting. I'm from Spain, and my english is still good enough to get all the stuff. Do you maybe have like a little "map" (I have no idea how it's in english the "patron", where you can find the different stitches)? I would make myself one but it seems quite difficult. Thanks!

Hi Laia. Sorry, we don´t have a "map". If you have knitted cables before, it shouldn´t be too hard;)

Thank you for this pattern! It was really easy to follow and a fun garment to knit. This was the first thing I've knitted for myself and my first attempt at cabling on DPNs. I am so pleased with the result. Thanks again. :)

Hi there,
What how long are the size 19 circular needles?

november 26, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterElizabeth

Thank you for this pattern!

I am new to knitting so I would like to be sure I know how to do it all before I start the project. I have two questions:

Can the DPNs be replaced with circular needles?

Since the projects starts and ends with 56 stitches and the increase is accomplished by change of needles not by adding stitches, does picking up 28 stitches in the end mean picking up every other stitch?

Again, thank you for the pattern and instructions.

This is probably a ridiculous question but I have come to the part where you switch from knitting in the round to back and forth knitting. I have no clue how to make the switch and I am completely stuck...I have looked for videos and no luck....probably because it is so obvious. Any pointers would be great!

Kelli,

To change to back and forth knitting from knitting in the round simply stop when you get to your stitch marker that you use to mark the start of each round. Then, turn your work and knit back flat, rather than continuing to knit rounds. When you're knitting back and forth you will need to purl on the wong side (WS) of the work and knit on the right side (RS). Does this make sense?

Love this and may have to get to it asap before it warms up.

I've gotten to the part where I need to start knitting back and forth, but it seems like the first round is K1, P12, K1 and round 2 is P1, K12, P1. Which then leaves me to do the cables backwards - is this right??

februar 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAlexis

Alexis,
I think it all depends upon how you were knitting in the round in the first place. If you were knitting so that the right side was actually on the inside of your needles, then yes...your even rows will be P1, K12, P1 rather than K1, P12, K1. This is how I ended up doing it for some reason. You will just end up knitting the cables by purling when you were supposed to knit and knitting when the pattern says to purl, I believe. You still will keep the cable needle to the front when the pattern says and to the back when it says....that is what I did in your situation and it seemed to achieve the same effect. Hopefully this helps rather than hinders!

februar 17, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterkelli

Alexis,
When you stop knitting in the round and start knitting flat you need to K1, P12, K1 on the wrong side (WS) of your work and P1, K12, P1 on the right side (RS) or outside. You will notice that you're only cabling on the RS so you don't need to do the cables backwards. Just follow the instructions as they are written and you will be fine.

Hello, How many balls of wall do I need to make this?
Many Thanks, Laura

august 28, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLaura

It would clarify the pattern if I knew exactly how many repeats on each size needle. To me it seems that it is 4 on 10.5 (2 on each arm), 2 on 15 (one on each arm) and a total of 5 on the 19s. (one on each arm and three across the back). Is this correct?

januar 28, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterNeenah

Laura and Neenah, its all in the pattern above ;)

Hi, I can see with my eyes the bottom of sleeve, or the cuff. I'm perplexed in starting with the pattern's rnd 1-2 seem to go right into cable stiching. Am I to imagine the seed stiching is implied? To form this cuff?

februar 10, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterAli

Ali,
You knit the moss stitch cuffs at the end. You will see this instruction in the last line of the pattern.
