Small and clever - hat, mittens and booties

We´re pretty pleased with this kit. It turned out cute as well as very functional;) It´s different to knit as you knit the hat from cord to cord, the mittens from tip to tip and the booties sideways. If you´re used to knitting, this will be a bit different, and it´s all about construction.
Size
0-4 (5-12) m
Yarn
Abuelita Merino Worsted / Abuelita Merino Worsted Multi
100 g base colour, 100 g pattern colour
Needles
Circular needles and DP needles US 6
Gauge
18 stitches = 4"
You need to know how to make an i-cord, how to increase and decrease to the left and the right as well as how to wrap and turn in the middle of a row to make this kit perfectly. If you don´t know how, try to look it up on youtube;)
Hat
The hat is knitted from cord to cord.
Cast on 3 stitches on DP needles US 6.
Knit an i-cord over these 3 stitches for about (6) 6.3”.
Turn your work and purl back.
Cast on one stitch at the beginning and the end of the row = 5 stitches.
Yoou´ll now start shaping the hat. Work in garter stitch, except for the 3 stitches in the middle. Place marker (PM) before and after these 3 stitches.
Row 1:
Slip 1, knit until the first PM, M1R (make 1 right), K3, M1L (make 1 left), knit the rest of the row.
Row 2:
Slip 1, knit until the first PM, P3, knit the rest of the row.
Repeat these 2 rows until you have 39 (43) stitches. You should just have finished row 2.
Change colours and remove the PMs.
Knit 2 rows.
Size 5-12 m only:
K 38, turn and knit back
All sizes:
K 33, turn and knit back

K 33, turn and knit back
Size 5-12 m only:
K 38, turn and knit back
Knit 2 rows.
Change colours, and PM before and after the 3 stitches in the middle.
Row 1:
Slip 1, knit until you´re 2 stitches away from the PM, SSK, K3, K2tog, knit the rest of the row.
Row 2:
Slip 1, knit until the PM, P2, knit the rest of the row.
Repeat these 2 roes until 5 stitches remain, and you should just have finished row 2.
SSK, K1, K2tog.
Turn, P3.
Make an i-cord for about (6) 6.3”.
Cast off and weave in ends.
Booties
Knitted sideways and assembled along the back and underneath.
Cast on 24 (28) stitches.
Knit 8 (12) rows.
*Knit 14 (16), turn and knit back*
Repeat from * to *, but subtract 1 stitch each time you turn (meaning you´ll knit 13 (15) next row.)
When you´ve done this 11 (12) times, cast off the first 3 (4) stitches.
Change colours and knit the rest of the row.
Knit 13 (15) rows.
Cast on 3 (4) stitches in the base colour and knit like this:
*K1, turn and knit back*.
Repeat from * to *, but add 1 stitch each time you turn ( meaning you´ll knit 2 next row.)
When you´ve repeated this 11 (12) times in total, knit 8 (12) rows and cast off loosly.
Fold like this and assemble the front first, then underneath, and finally in the back.
Mittens
The mittens are knitted from tip to tip, with an i-cord in the middle. We knitted the first inch in the base colour, and the rest in the pattern colour.
Cast on 8 stitches, 2 on each needle.
Needles 1 and 2 are one side, needles 3 and 4 are the other.
Knit 1 round.
Continue in stockinette and increase on every other round like this:
K1, M1L, knit until 1 stitch remains on needles 2, M1R, K2,
M1L, knit until 1 stitch remains on needle 4, M1R, K1.
Increase 4 (6) times in total. You´ll now have 24 (32) stitches.
When your work is 3 (3.4)” decrease 6 stitches evenly on the next round.
Knit a rib, K1, P1 for 1.2 (1.6)”.
K1, cast off the rest fo the stitches apart from the last two.
Use these 3 stitches to make an i-cord.
When the i-cord is 21.6 (25.6)”, cast on 15 (23) stitches.
Knit a rib, K1, P1 for 1.2 (1.6)”.
Start working in stockinette and increase 6 stitches evenly on the first round.
When the work is 2.6 (2.8)” from where the rib started, decrease on every other round like this:
K1, K2tog, knit until 3 stitches remain on needle 2, SSK, K2, K2tog.
knit until 3 stitches remain on needle 4, SSK, K1.
When 8 stitches remain, cut the yarn and pull it through the stitches.

Thanks for sharing this darling, clever pattern...have a first grandbaby and grandnephew who are going to enjoy this set.
I've been trying to print the small and clever hat, mittens and booties. I get the directions but not the pictures. Could you tell me what I should do to get the pictures?
Rachel
H, you should use the print article link at the bottom ;)
Peças adoráveis!! Amei a construção do gorrinho:))

i was wondering if you can post exactly how to fold the booties. also i f i want to just make this is solid colo do i forgo the cast on 3 stitiches after knit 13. are the toes sewn the long way? thank you very much.
Hi. We have a photo of how we fold the booties. After sewing along the bottom, sew along the backsides. You need to cast on 3 no matter what;)
Super lovely :)
I made these for my co-worker's new baby girl and she loved them! Check out the post on my blog. I linked it back to this page. Your designs are adorable. http://craftnights.tumblr.com/post/11786383197/baby-gifting
I love these!
One note though: the images are broken in the Print view. Not sure if you were aware of that.
can i buy these from you??
No, sorrt. We don´t sell finished products;)
i am so confused how i get from having 3 stitches for the i-cord to:
"Turn your work and purl back.
Cast on one stitch at the beginning and the end of the row = 5 stitches.
You´ll now start shaping the hat. Work in garter stitch, except for the 3 stitches in the middle. Place marker (PM) before and after these 3 stitches.
Row 1:
Slip 1, knit until the first PM, M1R (make 1 right), K3, M1L (make 1 left), knit the rest of the row."
so i purl back the 3 stitches and cast on the stitches at the beginning and end while i am purling???
then how do i end up with enough stitches to do row 1 which seems to require at least 7 stitches????
I am a novice knitter--I would really appreciate a little light shed on this part of the booties instructions:
Cast on 3 (4) stitches in the base colour and knit like this:
*K1, turn and knit back*.
Repeat from * to *, but add 1 stitch each time you turn ( meaning you´ll knit 2 next row.)
Do I cast on the stitches onto the needle with the 2nd color? Do I cast them onto the empty needle? What does it mean 'knit 2 next row", when it says to repeat 12 times?
Thank you!!!
I am confused, where do you w&t in the pattern?
Aiana, yes, you cast on by making backward loops while purling. It´s not hard:)
Sage, cast on the new stitches on the needles you´re about to start knitting with, in the new colour. It might look weird on paper, but will be fairly obvious once you reach the point:)
Knit 2 means knit 2 stiches, as it is explained, you add 1 s for each repetition.
Amber, we don´t understand? It is explained where you turn if that is what you mean?
