Winter-baby kit with hat and mittens

Winter babies need warm and cute clothes. Here´s a kit with hat and mitts for the first months.

Yarn
Pickles Extra Fine Merino, 50 gram each of 4 colours. 2 balls is enough if you only want one colour. Can also be knitted in Merino Silk or Cashmerino.

Needles
Short circular and double pointed needles US 4 (Can be knitted only with the DPN´s if you don´t have a short circular)
Extra needles to hold stitches. (You can also use a piece of yarn)

Sizes
0 - 3 mth (3-6 mth)

Gauge
4" = 21,5 s

HAT
Cast on 66 (78) stitches on the circular needle, or DPN´s if you don´t have one. Knit in the round. Knit ribbing, k1, p1 for about 1 (1.5) ".

You are now going to make extra stitches on the inside of the hat, Wich is going to be used to make the ear flaps later. This is done by knitting twice in to each stitch. The way you do that is first knit or purl as usual into the front part of the stitch, leave the stitch on the left needle, and then knit again into the back part of it. All this while continuing in ribbing, but the second time you knit into each stitch you can do a knit stitch. Next row then goes as this:

Knit 5 (6) stitches in ribbing as usual, then twice into each stitch for the next 15 (18) stitches. Then 26 (30) normal stitches, twice into the next 18, then 5 (6) normal.

On the next round start knitting stockinette, and put all the new stitches onto an additional needle/thread, and leave them for later. The best needle is a small safety pin, wich can be closed.

Continue in stockinette until the hat measures 4 (5) ". Then decrease by knitting the following two rounds with one stitch less between the decreases for each time, 5 times (change to dpn´s when necessarry)

Round 1: *K 4, K 2 tog* Repeat between * and * until the end of the round.
Round 2: K

Gather the remaining stitches and sew them and weave in the end.

Ear flaps
Place the stitches from the additional needle onto one of the us 4 dpn´s (one ear flap at the time.) and knit garter back and forth while decreasing one stitch in the beginning and end of every second row until you have 3 stitches left on your needles. Continue in garter until the band is long enough to be tied under the babys chin. Repeat for the other side.

MITTENS
Cast on 24 (24) stitches on US 4 dpn´s. Knit in the round. Knit ribbing, K1, P1 for 1,5 (2) ". Then repeat the following four rounds until the mitten measures about 3.5 (4.5) ". (End with a round 4) Repeat between * and * until end of rounds.

Round 1: *K1, P1*
Round 2: *K1, K1 below*
Round 3: *P1, K1*
Round 4: *K1 below, K1*

Then decrease by knitting the following four rounds once:

Round 1: *K3 tog, P1*
Round 2: *K1, K1 below*
Round 3: *P1, K3 tog*
Round 4: *K1 below, K1*

Gather the last stitches, sew and weave in the end.
